Dr. S. Marjorie Hosfeld

Physician's Dedication to Patients Maintained through Legacy Gift

Dr. S. Marjorie Hosfeld wanted to be a physician from the time she was four, according to her sister, Charlotte Tarpy, who was often her "pretend" patient when they were growing up in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania. Dr. Hosfeld realized her dream as a young woman, after receiving her education from Wilson College in Chambersburg, PA, Johns Hopkins University, and Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Hosfeld served on the obstetrics-gynecology staff of a hospital in Harrisburg before deciding to change specialties. After studying rehabilitation therapy on a three-year fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., she was on the staff of Magee Rehabilitation Hospital in Philadelphia. In 1978, Dr. Hosfeld was appointed as Medical Director of Physical Therapy at Paoli Hospital. She returned to the Hospital as a volunteer after retiring in 1988.

Dr. Hosfeld supported many causes, including Paoli Hospital, during her lifetime. Her dedication to helping patients recover fully after illness led her to name Paoli Hospital as one of the beneficiaries of a charitable trust that was created as part of her will. Unfortunately, Dr. Hosfeld herself succumbed to heart failure, passing away in 2007.

At the time, Paoli was creating a new Wound Care Education program, and the Marjorie Hosfeld Trust administrators agreed that this was a good match for the Trust's funds, given the increasing importance of wound prevention and care in patients' recoveries. This field is especially pertinent to elderly individuals, another area of particular interest to Dr. Hosfeld. Kathleen McLaughlin, MSN, RN, CWOCN, currently manages the Wound Care Education program, and focuses on training clinical staff throughout Paoli Hospital to become skilled in wound management.

We are honored to have been chosen by Dr. Hosfeld as a beneficiary of her estate, and pleased to be providing the important service of wound care education and treatment in her remembrance.
