Frank and Sharon Haarlander

Spotlight on Friends of Paoli Hospital

Paoli Hospital has a special place in the hearts of many in our community. For Frank and Sharon Haarlander, appreciation of the Hospital began when Sharon's mother, Mildred, relocated to the Haarlander's Berwyn home several years ago because of her worsening medical condition. Mildred was naturally very anxious about changing all of her numerous medical specialists and her hospital care provider. The Haarlanders turned to Paoli Hospital for help, and were greatly relieved with Mildred's seamless transition to new doctors with whom she was greatly pleased. Mildred also appreciated the wonderful care she received at the Hospital.

When the Haarlanders need hospital care for themselves or family members, they feel reassured by their initial contacts with Paoli Hospital's nursing staff. As Frank notes, "first impressions are so important, and the nurses are always very diligent, friendly, and continuously express their concern for our well-being and comfort." In addition to having great nurses and physicians on staff, Frank and Sharon find the administrative staff and the hospital's volunteers very supportive and dedicated. When their son had a fall, they felt fortunate that although Paoli Hospital's trauma center had not yet been certified, it was open and able to treat him.

Frank notes that as they age, and with family, including grandchildren, living locally, "knowing that one of the country's top-rated hospitals is part of our community is a great comfort to us." The Haarlanders want to help ensure that their family has access to the same high quality medical care they have experienced, but realize that having a great hospital with wonderful nurses, physicians, and Chester County's only trauma center comes at a cost.

Accordingly, several years ago the Haarlanders decided, in addition to making annual fund contributions, to name Paoli Hospital as a beneficiary in their living trusts. Including the Hospital in their estate plans is their way of saying "thank you" for all that Paoli has done for their family and this community.

Frank Haarlander is a volunteer member of the Planned Giving Committee, and he and Sharon are members of the Loyalty Circle, Potter Society and Paoli Society.
